About Sleep Medicine Society of Kuwait

Established in 2018 under the umbrella of the Kuwait Medical Association, the Sleep Medicine Society of Kuwait aims to raise awareness and advance the field of sleep medicine across the country. The society focuses on improving the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and circadian rhythm disorders, while promoting research and collaboration with local and international health institutions.

Its core mission includes public education, capacity building for healthcare professionals, advance scientific research in this field, and advocate for early screening for sleep disorders to ensure better sleep health and overall well-being in the community.

رابطة أمراض النوم الكويتية (SMS-Kuwait)

تأسست رابطة أمراض النوم الكويتية في عام 2018  تحت مظلة الجمعية الطبية الكويتية، بهدف تعزيز الوعي بطب النوم وتطوير هذا التخصص الحيوي في دولة الكويت. تسعى الرابطة إلى النهوض بخدمات تشخيص وعلاج أمراض النوم مثل الأرق، اضطرابات التنفس أثناء النوم، واضطرابات الساعة البيولوجية، إلى جانب دعم الأبحاث والتعاون مع الهيئات الصحية والمجتمعية داخل الكويت وخارجها.

تركّز الرابطة على نشر الثقافة الصحية بين أفراد المجتمع، رفع كفاءة الكوادر الطبية، تعزيز التعاون العلمي، وتشجيع الفحص المبكر لأمراض النوم بما ينعكس إيجابًا على صحة الفرد والمجتمع.

Our Goals

  • Advance Sleep Medicine Practice in Kuwait
  • Promote the highest standards in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of sleep disorders.
  • Support accreditation of sleep laboratories and clinics in alignment with AASM and ESRS standards.
  • Education and Training
  • Provide continuous medical education (CME) for physicians, technologists, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Develop fellowship and training programs in sleep medicine and polysomnography.
  • Organize workshops, symposia, and annual conferences to update knowledge and skills.
  • Research and Innovation
  • Encourage and facilitate clinical, translational, and basic research in sleep medicine and related fields.
  • Build national databases and registries on sleep disorders to guide policy and research.
  • Promote collaboration with regional and international research groups.
  • Public Awareness and Community Engagement
  • Raise public awareness about the importance of healthy sleep and the consequences of sleep disorders.
  • Organize community outreach campaigns on sleep hygiene, OSA, insomnia, and circadian rhythm disorders.
  • Partner with schools, workplaces, and media for sleep health promotion.
  • Policy and Advocacy
  • Collaborate with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other stakeholders to develop sleep health policies and guidelines.
  • Advocate for the recognition of sleep medicine as a specialty/subspecialty within Kuwait’s healthcare system.
  • Promote insurance coverage and accessibility of sleep disorder diagnostics and therapies (e.g., PAP devices).
  • Professional Collaboration
  • Foster collaboration between pulmonologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, ENT, pediatricians, and other specialties.
  • Create multidisciplinary task forces for guideline development and quality assurance.
  • Strengthen links with international sleep societies (AASM, ESRS, WASM, GCC societies).
  • Quality and Patient Safety
  • Establish national standards and accreditation pathways for sleep labs.
  • Develop guidelines for home sleep testing (HSAT) and PAP adherence monitoring.
  • Promote patient-centered care with emphasis on safety, comfort, and cultural considerations.
