About the Kuwait Thoracic Society (KTS)

Established in 1992 by leading physicians including Dr. Adnan Abel, Dr. Mousa Khadadah, Dr. Bader Al-Shammari, and Dr. Adel Khudr, the Kuwait Thoracic Society (KTS) is the national body dedicated to advancing respiratory, sleep, and critical care medicine. Its core objectives include promoting high clinical standards, supporting continuing medical education, fostering research and innovation, and guiding national policy in pulmonary and thoracic care. KTS organizes scientific meetings, workshops, and regional collaborations to support professional development, while also leading public awareness campaigns on asthma, COPD, smoking cessation, and air quality. Through these efforts, KTS is shaping the future of respiratory medicine and thoracic surgery in Kuwait, with a commitment to excellence in patient care and healthcare leadership.

تأسست الرابطة الكويتية لأمراض الصدر عام 1992 بمبادرة من مجموعة من الأطباء المهتمين بتطوير هذا المجال في الكويت، وكان من أبرزهم الدكتور موسى خدادة، إلى جانب مساهمات كل من الدكتور عدنان عبد، والدكتور بدر الشمري، والدكتور عادل خضر. وتُعد الرابطة الهيئة الوطنية الرائدة في مجال الأمراض الصدرية، واضطرابات النوم، والعناية المركزة التنفسية.

تهدف الرابطة إلى تعزيز الممارسات الطبية المبنية على الأدلة، ودعم التعليم الطبي المستمر، وتطوير البحث العلمي، والإسهام في صياغة السياسات الصحية المتعلقة بالأمراض الصدرية وجراحة الصدر. كما تنظّم مؤتمرات وورش عمل علمية، وتشارك بفعالية في حملات التوعية المجتمعية حول الربو، والانسداد الرئوي المزمن (COPD)، وأضرار التدخين. ومن خلال أنشطتها المتعددة، تسعى الرابطة إلى تشكيل مستقبل الأمراض الصدرية وجراحة الصدر في دولة الكويت.

The Society’s main activities are as follows.
Organizing a

Monthly meeting

for all specialists in chest diseases, including pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists. These meetings focus on reviewing complex clinical cases (Clinical Grand Round), a practice initiated by the Society in 2018 and continuing to date.

Hosting approximately

Six scientific events annually

including accredited scientific days and lectures, through the Continuing Medical Education Program of the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specialization, aimed at educating pulmonologists in Kuwait and updating them on the latest developments in respiratory medicine.

During the

COVID-19 pandemic

members of the Society played a significant role in educating the general public about the disease’s symptoms, how to manage the pandemic, and the importance of vaccination. The Society was among the first to issue a public statement encouraging vaccination once vaccines became available.

such as the Radiology Society, Allergy and Immunology Society, and Emergency Medicine Society in organizing joint scientific activities.

for pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, and related specialists through organizing accredited conferences, courses, and workshops.

in the fields of respiratory and thoracic medicine, and support research initiatives that enhance the understanding and treatment of chest diseases in Kuwait.

about respiratory diseases, especially common conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and tuberculosis, through media campaigns and educational activities.

among various specialties (e.g., radiology, pathology, immunology, emergency medicine) and with local and international bodies to exchange expertise and improve services.

in the field of respiratory and thoracic medicine by supporting accreditation programs and ongoing performance reviews at both clinical and institutional levels.

for the treatment of respiratory diseases in Kuwait to standardize clinical practices and improve the quality of patient care.
